WW1 Centenary - A Service of Commemoration on the Centenary of the Outbreak of the First World War.

Today we attended a service at 11am in St. Edwards Church where the congregation laid Rosemary on the War Memorial.
I found the experience incredibly emotional, I couldn't stop thinking about my Great-Grandmother who lost my Great-Grandfather in 1916, while pregnant with my Great Aunt.
One hundred years ago today my family in Stow had no idea what was to come. Tears rolled down my face as I touched my Great-Grandfather's name engraved on the War Memorial and thought about the destruction he and his comrades would have witnessed.
I thought about the residents in Stow and if they were sat nearby on this day in 1914. Did they go to the Church and pray or did they stay together at home? Another day to spend all together.
There are lots of unanswered questions but one thought was clear. We can never forget the sacrifice of this generation. Not only of the fallen who died in conflict but also the servicemen who were wounded, their families who became single parents, the married couples who attempted to get on with life - when memories were raw and painful. The children who missed their Fathers and the families who worried at home. We remember the people of Stow on the Wold and villages, 1914 -1918.
