The Bert England Memorial Trophy and Award

9/08/2016

During the last few years we have lost a lot of well-known local faces.  The characters that made Stow district more than a community. We were a family, knitted together by each other, our villages, towns, schools and shops.  Most recently Stow on the Wold District Poppy Appeal said farewell to Herbert ‘Bert’ England, our eldest volunteer, and supporter, who died in June, aged 99.
Bert was a local celebrity, who personified ‘service before self’, not only during the War where he served working on experimental radar, but also in our community - he never missed a year collecting for the Poppy Appeal and served as a committee member on lots of local groups.
Bert loved his days spent in our Poppy HQ, he especially enjoyed chatting to local faces and tourists, sat with a cup of tea in one hand and a homemade cake in the other.
Bert was the reason why the Poppy Appeal HQ was so important for his generation.  In the harsh winter he was warm, fed and was surrounded by people every day for two weeks.  Bert was an enormous part of our appeal and Sarah, Poppy Appeal Organiser, decided she wanted Bert’s memory to ‘Live On’ during every appeal.
Bert represented the generation we are losing. Men and Women who sacrificed themselves to ensure we had today.
It was with this in mind that the “Bert England Memorial Award” and “Bert England Memorial Trophy” is to be launched on October 28th 2016, allowing Bert and his generation’s memory to always ‘Live On’.

THE BERT ENGLAND MEMORIAL TROPHYhaving worked on on experimental radar during the war. It was new then and very secret. Experts were mostly civilian professors and he assisted with experiments
The trophy will be awarded to a business in the town.  Each year a different competition will be launched and the shops and businesses will be invited to enter.
This year the town centre shops, pubs, cafés and ALL businesses with a window are invited to enter the Stow on the Wold Poppy Appeal Shop Window Competition 2016 by decorating windows inspired by the theme ‘’World War One”. To commemorate the 100th Anniversary of the Battle of the Somme.
Any size windows are eligible and ‘WW1’ can be interpreted in any sense. Be as creative as you can.
The idea is to promote the Poppy Appeal, together, during our collection period.
Get creative, take part and join in!
